Photography set up in the American Bottle Auctions studio.

Jeff Wichmann has written an excellent tutorial on the subject, titled Photographing Bottles and Glass.

If you've read his books, or seen his auction catalogs, you know that he knows how to photograph bottles to their best advantage. His article outlines everything you need to know, and saves you years of having to learn the hard way. Thanks, Jeff!

Why Join an Antique Bottle Collecting Club?

That's a good question, one posed recently by the Association of Collecting Clubs (A.C.C. website: Collectors.org), the group that works to promote all kinds of hobby and collecting clubs.
ACC.JPG
Here's their list of 6,257 clubs -- yes, six thousand two hundred sixty seven collector clubs!
It is FREE to have your club listed, so head over there now and fill out the online form.
Then you will start getting their e-newsletters too, with updates about all kind of things that affect the collecting hobby, and impacts on clubs on shows.
We still haven't covered why you should join a collecting club. I could paraphrase, but the A.C.C. has summed it up quite well:
  • Collecting groups are an important segment of our antiques, art and collectibles community. All of these clubs have one basic thing in common - they exist to help collectors.
  • For many collecting areas, these clubs - and their members - represent the backbone of the knowledge base for the collecting area that group supports. They also provide connections to other collectors, and opportunities to develop friendships that can last a life time.
  • Clubs are a great resource for expanding a collector's knowledge about a collecting area, for finding new materials and for determining current values; even for selling your collectibles.
  • Most clubs encourage networking by offering annual conventions, sponsoring shows and social gatherings which bring club members together. Smaller geographic clubs often have monthly meetings. Combined, our collecting clubs have 10's of thousands of events every year!
  • In addition to the meetings and other events, many clubs issue member newsletters and journals and have a website and discussion forums.
  • A parallel mission to educating their membership for many clubs is that of researching, studying and documenting the various artifacts relating to the collecting area a particular club supports. Some clubs publish reference books and price guides and establish archives, educational exhibits and museums. Seminars, workshops and conferences are often a part of the club convention or show, and those having monthly meetings often have a speaker discussing a topic related to their collecting area.
  • Most clubs offer a pleasing balance between education, social and business. They often are the segment of the antiques, art and collectibles industry that keep collectors collecting.
Looking at the role of clubs more broadly, not only do collecting clubs support their memberships, but indirectly they strengthen the industry for the greater benefit of other segments - the auction houses and galleries, antique shops and malls, antique and collectible shows, collector publications, appraisers, restoration specialists and all other parts of this wonderful antiques and collectibles family.

A little this, a little that, just some interesting bottle-bits to entertain and/or educate you collectors.

A while ago someone posted one of these odd shaped cobalt blue glass bottles on the Bottle Collectors Facebook page, looking for info. So I did some googling and put together that composite describing the Cremex Shampoo barber bottle.

Sold by Edwards Harlene Company, Cremex was an English hair product sold as a powder, to be mixed up in the dispenser bottle.
In the mid-1880s, Goldstein founded the Edwards' Harlene Co., manufacturers of hair products, initially of 5 New Oxford Street and by late 1891 of 95 and 96 High Holborn, London. Harlene products were promoted through a series of large pictorial newspaper advertisements that made extravagant claims. One shows a woman with long flowing curly locks, claiming “Edwards' Harlene positively forces luxuriant hair, whiskers and moustachios to grow heavily within a few weeks without injury to the skin no matter what the age. The world-renowned remedy for baldness, from whatever cause arising. As a producer of whiskers and moustachios it has never been equalled. As a curer of weak or thin eyelashes, or restoring grey hair to its original colour, it never fails.” [Source]

Here are 2 more interesting hair product articles, both about the long-haired Sutherland Sisters Tonic.
  1. The Amazing 7 Sutherland Sisters by Ferdinand Meyer
  2. Untangling the Tale of the Seven Sutherland Sisters and Their 37 Feet of Hair by Lisa Hix

Pretty colored fruit jars sparkle in Jeff Klingler's window.

"What color do you think this is?" always sparks a heated discussion. Read about this interesting project on color measurement and setting glass color standards (on Peachridge Glass).

American Bottle Auctions has created a new auction house just for vintage marbles. Check out the website for American Marble Auctions. You'll find a growing archive of photos and articles, as well as exclusively vintage marble auctions.

Owner Jeff Wichmann says:

"American Marble Auctions will offer just antique marbles (mid-20th century and before), not contemporary blown marbles."

“Selling marbles through Internet auctions is a complicated business. Presenting these historic and beautiful collectibles poses many challenges. We will combine the latest technology in graphics and bidding software to present the best pictures and descriptions as possible, with conservative grading. And each marble sold comes with a money-back guarantee.”

Read more in this informative article all about the new American Marble Auctions first big auction.

When most bottle collectors think of crown tops, they think of the traditional soda pop bottle mouth. [Learn about crown top sodas here.]

But there's another kind of crown top bottle, and it's the subject of a new book, “The Crown Top Book – German Porcelain Perfume Bottles, 1920-1939” by Pauline E. Turco.

Nice to read that: "An entire chapter is devoted to Crown Top reissues, reproductions, fantasies and imposters with detailed information and comparative photos to assist in distinguishing the old from the new and the authentic from the shams." - Read the Antique Trader review (w/purchase info).

Poison Skulls ~ Collecting Antique Poison Bottles Info Resource

[Thought I'd rerun this 2009 post for Halloween.]

It's always good news when bottles and bottle collecting are the focus of the Antique Week paper's cover story. It is so great to see our wonderful hobby front and center.

It is an article about English Poison Bottles, written by David McCormick. [Read the article here.] It has several colorful photos of bottles on the front page, and the back page of the 1st section of the paper.

There is no way that anyone will miss the nice big pix. And hopefully will think "Hey -- another bottle article -- this must be a happening category -- I want to know more!"

Mr. McCormick put down the AntiqueBottles.com website down as a reference for his article -- here's the link to the site's POISON page -- http://www.antiquebottles.com/poison/

Check out their Poison Bottle Hall of Fame for pix of some really cool Poison bottles -- skulls, cobalts, and more -- http://www.antiquebottles.com/poison/fame.html

Here's their American Poison Bottle book link -- http://poisonbottleclub.org/otherpages/bottlebook.html

Thanks to Antique Week, David McCormick, and all the hobbyists, collectors, and dealers who take the time to share and support this fantastic hobby.

And Happy Halloween to all you bottle collectors!

Muncie Fruit Jar Club to Meet at L.L. Ball House this Sunday 11/3/13 ~ Antique Bottles and Jars

The L.L. Ball House, today.

Dick Cole, president of the Muncie Indiana fruit jar club, writes to tell us the club is having this Sunday's meeting (11/03/13 @ 1:30pm) at a very special location: The Lucius Lorenzo Ball House on the grounds of the Minnetrista Center . The club is meeting there by special arrangement as the home is not open to the general public. So this is the club meeting you should not miss.

The building is one of the five founding Ball brother's original Muncie homes. The brothers moved from New York to Indiana in the 1880s to relocate their glass manufacturing business. William H., Frank C., Edmund B., George A., and Lucius L. Ball, founded what is now Ball Corporation, prospered in business, married into Indiana families, and began engaging in a variety of community activities.

Read Dick Cole's History of the L.L. Ball House here.

Find the Midwest Antique Fruit Jar & Bottle Club @ http://fruitjar.org/

Minnetrista: A Ball Family Legacy
In 1887, the Ball family moved its glass manufacturing business from Buffalo, New York to Muncie. Ball Brothers Glass Company became one of America's best known manufacturers of canning jars.

The Ball family purchased most of the land along the north bank of White River between Wheeling and Granville pikes in 1893. The name chosen by the family for the property was taken from a Sioux word, "mna" (pronounced mini) which means "water," and combined with the English word, "tryst," to form "Minnetrista," or, "a gathering place by the water."

L.L. Ball house was remodeled in 1910.

Remembering Lou McFadden, Noted Ohio Milk Bottle Collector

Lou and Sue McFadden

Sue Mcfadden has shared the sad news of the passing of her beloved husband Lou.
"The last month has seemed an unbelievable blur. My husband and best friend died this evening after such a fast decline in his health it is hard to imagine. Lou had dementia that worsened after a fall in August, and tonight he is free of the confusion of that horrible illness. The last several days were sweet days to spend together and Lou was able to spend his last day very peacefully. Rest in peace in God's love, sweetie."
The Findlay Bottle Club sends it's deepest condolences to Sue, as well as to Sue and Lou's family and friends. A sad loss to all that knew Lou, and to the milk bottle hobby. He will be missed, and long remembered.

Obituary for Louis B. McFadden

Louis B. McFadden, 75, of Winesburg, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013 following a period of declining health.

He was born on December 14, 1937 in Massillon to the late Robert and Janice McFadden. He was a graduate of Orrville High School, and was proud to say he was a Marine, serving from 1956 until 1958. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Bruce.

Lou is survived by his wife, Suzanne, whom he married on December 20, 1984; his brother, Robert (Barbara) McFadden of Barnard, VT; sister-in-law, Lois Cox of Cincinnati; 2 step-children, Blake (Cindy) Sacha of Gilbert, AZ and Cammie (Bob) Edgar of Stevensville, MT; 3 grandchildren, Katie and Andrew Sacha and Mitch Edgar; numerous nephews and nieces, great nephews and great nieces; special friends since childhood in Orrville, Dave and Mary Lee Maiwurm; and special friends from Winesburg, Bob and Esther Beechy.

Lou grew up in Orrville and lived most of his adult life in Winesburg. He loved farming, living on and farming a small farm outside of Winesburg for a number of years. He worked as a Fieldman for 4 dairies over a period of 43 years – starting work as a young man at Orrville Milk Company, then Lawson Dairy, followed by Superior Dairy, and retiring from Reiter Dairy in 1999. He loved Dixieland Jazz, and played the drums for enjoyment.

He had a passion for collecting antique milk bottles and was very proud of his milk bottle collection, numbering about 3,500 bottles from the state of Ohio. Lou’s bottles, procured over the past 30 years, were widely recognized in the state and beyond as a unique and unusual collection. Lou was the author of the book “Ohio’s Dairies” written and published in 2009, giving him much pleasure.

Following Lou’s wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held in Winesburg on Saturday, November 16, at 2:00 p.m. at
Zion Reformed Church with Pastor Brent Easton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.
[Map/directions link]

Spidell Funeral Home in Mount Eaton is handling the arrangements. A memorial website has been created by the funeral home and may be accessed at the Spidell Funeral Home website where you may share a memory or sign the guestbook.

In lieu of flowers, Suzanne requests memorial contributions be made to Zion Reformed Church, P.O. Box 33, Winesburg, OH 44690.

The Midwest Antique Fruit Jar & Bottle Club of Muncie IN is putting on their January 2014 fruit jar collectors event, the "Muncie Fruit Jar Show & Get Together", with collectors and dealers coming from all over the U.S.

The Muncie Fruit Jar Shows are well-known for the amazing and rare items brought for sale, for the outstanding educational collector-displays exhibited during the show, as well as for the great group of fruit jar enthusiasts who treat this multi-day event like a combination convention/club meeting/reunion.

The show will be held on Sunday January 12, 2011, at the Horizon Convention Center 401 S High St Muncie IN 47304, and open to the public 9am-2pm, with $2 admission, and free parking.

Join us for "room-hop-shopping" at the Baymont Inn Hotel before the show, on Thursday-Saturday, January 9, 10, 11. The hotel is located at 3400 N Chadam Ln Muncie IN 47304.

The public is welcome! You don't need to have a room at the hotel to come visit and room-hop-shop. We encourage new collectors to stop by and see what we're up to, and learn a little something about fruit jars.

Fruit jar collectors spend several days at the hotel before the Sunday "official" show, sharing and trading. There are also scheduled talks presented by long-time expert collectors like Jerry McCann, and many impromptu talks as subjects come up. A few tall-stories are told, too, all adding to the fun. Groups of friends, old and newly-made, often head out for lunch or dinner at area restaurants. The room-hop-shopping continues until late in the night, and starts again early each morning, after the hotel's complimentary breakfast, and lots of coffee!

On Saturday the Jelly-Jammers Club holds their meeting, and then there is the Midwest Club's meeting, open to all, followed by a lively open-consignment/fee-free auction.

The show set-up is early Sunday morning, at the Horizon Center in downtown Muncie, a quick drive from the hotel. The show opens to the public at 9am, ending at 2pm, when the dealers pack up and head home, weary but happily reminiscing about the good time they had being with other collectors who speak the special language of Munice, Fruit-Jar-ese!

'The Apollo' Candy Jar from FH Roberts ~ Vintage Candy & Chocolates Collectibles

picked up this great little display jar at our bottle show, embossed simply with THE APOLLO. I was pretty sure it was a candy jar, but researching it was a little bit of a project, as ''The Apollo'' brings up a lot of hits for ''Show Time At the Apollo'', and of course there's the Apollo Space Program. And I didn't know it was actually for ''The Apollo Chocolates'', which were made by the FH Roberts Candy Co.

But eventually I fell down the right rabbit hole, and found some info about FH Roberts, the company and the man, as well as lots of The Apollo Chocolates collectibles -- boxes, jars, tins, signs, and advertising. My ''collection'' consists of the above jar, a screw-top jar, and a bonbon spoon (details below). Let's just say the rest of the items below are from my ''virtual collection''.

FH Roberts was involved in many candy companies. He started selling his Apollo Chocolates in 1903, and sold the business after WWI, but it continued on in the same name. Fred H. Roberts passed away in 1920.

My small (approx. 6" tall) clear glass jar.

This small (approx. 6" tall) SCA ground lip jar was the 2nd addition to my Apollo collection.

This amethyst colored jar is a variation of the clear one I have. This one is also base embossed FH Roberts Boston. Sadly, I didn't win the bid on it.

This is a clear jar only base embossed FH Roberts Boston.

Dented Glass Jar: Bishop's Spoon Ledge Jar / Cooper & Co Grocers, Glasgow / History & Photos

I came across this odd looking glass jar, and thought I'd share my findings. It's an English jar, not rare, they come up on ebay for less than $20.00. And the history of the jar is not a mystery, but it's still an interesting piece.

Dick Cole, President of the Muncie Fruit Jar Club [fruitjar.org] writes to tell us of the great new

Fruit Far Display at the Minnetrista Museum in Muncie

"Minnetrista has moved the Gift Ship from the Lobby of the main building.  They combined it with the Orchard Shop.

The resulting empty space was filled with fruit jars.  What better choice?

Since it is on the first floor, it is open to the public and free.

How long will the display be there? Probably until next May.

Those of you who can’t make the monthly meetings can see it when you come to Muncie for the Annual Show in January."
